How much caffeine is too much?
The U.S. FDA says healthy adults can have up to 400mg of caffeine a day without having adverse health effects. Limits may be less for children and pregnant women.
That would be like having eight 12-oz cans of Diet Coke, four to five cups of coffee (1 cup = 8oz) or 20 squares of dark chocolate (1 square = 1oz).

Is caffeine safe?
Caffeine is known to be safe when consumed in moderation. Every day, millions of people enjoy food and beverages with caffeine, including coffee, tea and soft drinks. Because caffeine has been consumed for centuries, we know a lot about it. It is widely studied, and how much we use in our drinks is known to be safe.
What does caffeine do to your body?
Caffeine is a mild stimulant and can affect people in different ways depending on:
- how much you have
- when it is consumed, and
- how often you consume it.

Is caffeiene addictive?
No. FoodInsight.org says there is no evidence of caffeine addiction.

Is caffeine dehydrating?
The main ingredient in all of our caffeinated beverages is water. So while they may have a mild diuretic effect, the fact they contain water means they still help to hydrate you.

Can coffee cause heartburn?
Foods and drinks with caffeine, like coffee, may trigger heartburn. However, the science isn’t clear. Some say heartburn symptoms from coffee may be a result of other components of coffee other than caffeine.
Healthy individuals need not worry that their daily cup of coffee or caffeinated beverage is harming their health.
