What is the difference between PlantBottle™ packaging and traditional PET plastic bottle?
PlantBottleTM packaging and traditional PET are both made of PET, or polyethylene terephthalate. The difference:
- Traditional PET is made from 100% fossil-based ingredients.
- PlantBottleTM PET is made with up to 30% plant-based material – a renewable resource. It looks, feels and recycles the same way as traditional PET plastic.
Why does The Coca-Cola Company use PlantBottleTM packaging?
We use PlantBottleTM packaging to leave a smaller footprint on our planet. It helps us use less petroleum and more renewable materials.
Where does the plant material come from?
PlantBottleTM packaging comes from sugarcane-based ingredients. We turn the natural sugars found in sugarcane into PET plastic. We also use the waste from the sugarcane manufacturing process.
Which products use PlantBottleTM packaging?
More than 25% of our PET plastic in the U.S. is PlantBottle™ packaging.* DASANI, smartwater, Simply and a few others can be found in PlantBottleTM packages.

No. Our PlantBottleTM packaging is BPA-free. In fact, all of our plastic beverage bottles are BPA-free.
What is BPA? Is BPA found in your packaging?
BPA stands for bisphenol A.
BPA is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate – a hard, clear plastic. It is also used to make the coating (lining) for aluminum cans and other metal packaging. It is used in thousands of materials around the world, including food and drink packaging.
BPA is used in the linings of our beverage cans to protect the quality and taste of the beverage inside.
